Lismore Kayak Challenge: Ganavan to Lismore Light and backThe Lismore Kayak Challenge

For technical reasons, this year's Challenge has been postponed.

Check back here for a revised date. The rescheduling does not affect the 2017 Oban Sea Kayak, which will take place as planned on Saturday 26th August 2017.

Categories and Prizes

Categories

The event splits entries into 2 classes, Performance Boats and Touring Boats. We have decided to maintain this format in our event as we feel that the distinction between the two categories is sufficient for the time being. However, this may change in the future with the development of new and faster boats in both categories. The system we calculate, where boats, whether surf ski or kayaks, are classified into sea kayak, fast sea kayak and performance kayak determined by the ratio of waterline length against width. We will class fast sea kayaks and performance kayaks as Performance Boats and sea kayaks as Touring Boats.

See here for how the classes are measured and here for a listing of boats.

We will be at Kilbowie on the day checking boats out and will start to compile our own UK list of boats and their classification.

We hope this will provide an ongoing useable classification for our race that others might adopt.

As last year, to add to the fun this year we are going to stagger the start with the performance boats setting off 20 minutes behind the touring boats so that the performance boats have a target to chase and the fastest tourers could have a chance of being first boat home, based on last years results it could be a close run thing.

Prizes

Prizes will be awarded to first past the post in each Race category. Performance Race Kayak, includes Ocean Surf Skis, open to men and women, with a separate Touring Sea Kayak category with trophies for both the fastest man and woman in the Touring class.

Our Doubles Kayak Class is steadily growing, so we anticipate more entries this year - either men, women or mixed.

A raffle will take place at the reception, which is always good fun, with lots of prizes.

Team Trophy

This year will see more emphasis given to the 'Team' category with the introduction of a Team Trophy, kindly sponsored by Oban Sea Kayak Guides. This will be for teams of 3 who must paddle together through the whole race. We hope it will encourage some of those who are a little daunted by the thought of paddling solo round Kerrera but, together with friends, would consider having a go. If you have fancied the race before but would prefer company for your first race or if you would just prefer company then this might be for you.

When you complete the entry form add in your team name and we will sort out the details from there.
